Rise and grind: Mitch Zak gets up at 3:30am every day to sit with his English Bulldog Princess, run six miles, clear his mind, read something written by Jon Gordon, and get ready to begin his day at 7:30am. He is among California’s leading communications strategists, with nearly 30 years of public policy, political, crisis and C-suite expertise.

As a co-founder of one of California’s top communications firms, Zak relishes his role as a relentlessly positive team builder who grooms teams with high standards, client-focus, and self-motivation. He knows health care, insurance, water, transportation, real estate, finance, public safety, government reform and alternative energy, crisis and litigation communications, working on behalf of government, business and nonprofit organizations. Above all else, Zak’s commitment to out work the competition and deliver content that meets “the Randle Standard” drives his personal and professional satisfaction.

During his career, Zak has worked with, learned from and written for California leaders including Meg Whitman, former governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pete Wilson, California Public Employees Retirement System CEO Marcie Frost, Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee, California Hospital Association President & CEO Carmela Coyle, Golden 1 Credit Union President and CEO Donna Bland, Golden State Water Company Senior Vice President Denise Kruger and Kern Oil & Refining Co. President and CEO Jennifer Haley. These extraordinary and diverse leaders have sharpened his strategic planning skills, executive leadership and ability to successfully navigate high stakes communications situations.

Zak began his career serving the Wilson Administration from 1991-1998 as a member of the Governor’s personal staff and in executive positions at the California Department of Fish & Game and California Trade and Commerce Agency. Zak was a key player in Governor Wilson’s successful 1994 re-election campaign and, working with Jeff Randle, helped lead the Governor’s political and ballot measure operation.

Strategic planning, message development, media relations and integrated communications programs are Zak’s specialties. He prepared government and industry leaders for interviews with the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Sacramento Bee, Associated Press, FORTUNE and broadcast television outlets including CNN, CNBC, FOX News and FOX Business. Zak has contributed to Randle’s award-winning proprietary digital advocacy practice, and as an editor for the firm’s annual Digital Influencer Report.

Zak is a proud Aggie and Trojan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from University of California, Davis, and a master’s degree in public administration from University of Southern California. He is a Trustee for Jesuit High School, previously served on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Press Club and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sacramento Public Relations Association. He is married to Tami Zak, and they have two children Deuce and Molly. Zak is an avid golfer, Arnold Palmer and Cleveland sports fan.
